Network-attached storage (NAS) is the name given to dedicated data storage technology that can be connected directly to a computer network to provide centralized data access and storage to heterogeneous network clients.
NAS uses file-based protocols such as NFS, CIFS or SMB. NAS uses a file-based access approach, via a single IP address, while storage area networks (SAN's) can use a block-based approach accessed via the Fibre Channel or ISCSI protocols .
